We are an IT unit located in the Office of Human Resources (OHR). Our work has significant impact on OHR and our customers who are the employees of L&I. Our OHR IT unit provides a wide range of critical IT support to division and agency partners and customers, such as, application support and enhancements, workforce analytics reporting, website maintenance, and desktop support.

Some of what you’ll do in this internship:

  • Work on overpayment log to identify and prepare retirement record corrections necessary

  • Identify non-pay impact items from audit backlog
  • Assist with monitoring shared inboxes
  • Assist with new employee onboarding and collecting and scanning new hire first day forms to RightFax

L&I Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) Internship

Some of what you’ll do in this internship:

  • Assist in logging received PFML notices that come in from the Employment Security Department (ESD). Log the notices and any updates in the PFML tracker. Send out email notifications based on the notices to Supervisors, Human Resource Consultants (HRCs), and Payroll Specialist.
  • Assist Payroll in monitoring the PFML inbox and look for emails regarding an employee’s intent to apply for PFML. Employees are required to provide 30 days notice of intent to apply if possible.
  • Assist Payroll in monitoring the PFML inbox and look for notices regarding FMLA and/or Shared Leave approvals. Log notice of approvals in PFML Tracker.
  • Meet with Supervisors and Employees to go over plan for submitting leave while the Employee is out on planned PFML.
  • Become familiar with requirements to maintain Medical benefits while the individual in on protected leave. Also become familiar with the impact that Leave Without Pay has with salaried employees who will still need to maintain their medical premiums while they are out.
  • Become familiar with other impacts such as Seniority Date, Retirement contributions, and review period so that these questions and concerns can be addresses when meeting with employees.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Conference Support Intern

Organization: Office of Financial Management (OFM)

Location: Remote/Washington State 

Overview: The Office of Financial Management (OFM) is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic intern to provide crucial support for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Conference. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to enterprise-level strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the state of Washington.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the DEI Special Project Manager and the Workforce Planning and Strategy team to provide comprehensive support for the DEI Conference.
  • Assist in coordinating informational sessions and meetings related to the conference.
  • Update and maintain the conference website to ensure accuracy and relevance of information.
  • Design the conference program, ensuring alignment with DEI objectives and fostering an inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Collect and analyze feedback from conference attendees to inform future event planning and improvement efforts.
  • Serve as a backup participant in section-level initiatives, providing support as needed.
  • Act as a liaison with the DEI Conference Core Team to facilitate communication and collaboration among state agencies and external partners.
  • Engage with state communicators, sharing updates, processes, and strategies related to the conference.
  • Monitor and manage chat interactions during virtual events to ensure a seamless and inclusive experience for all participants.
  • Work closely with the communications manager to review and proofread website content and program materials, ensuring accessibility standards are met.
  • Maintain regular communication with customers, including statewide HR leaders, agency staff, and external partners, utilizing various platforms such as email, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Joint Base Lewis McChord DPW Environmental Division

The Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works’ mission is to protect and enhance the JBLM environment through education, leadership, and stewardship. The Environmental Division implements programs to ensure compliance with multiple environmental laws as well as clean-up of past contamination, management of current environmental hazards, pollution prevention, and conservation of natural resources.

Environmental Protection Specialist

The internship will be assisting and working alongside the current environmental protection specialists on staff for the collection, storage, and transportation of hazardous waste. The internship will be working in both the office and in the field on Joint Base Lewis McChord. Intern must be able to lift up to 50lbs. 

This 6-12 week course will prepare an intern for jobs related to the management and transport of hazardous waste and materials. The intern will have a good sense as to what is required to be learned and mastered prior to applying for a position related to hazardous waste/materials in the Federal, public, or private sector.

Core Duties Include:

1. Hazardous Waste Management
Monitors and inspects the handling, marking, storage, packing, transporting, turning in, and disposal of hazardous waste to ensure compliance with applicable installation, local, state and federal environmental regulations.

2. Hazardous Materials Spill Response
Responds to and provides basic guidance on cleanup of petroleum, chemical, and wastewater spills.

3. Educational Outreach
Provides training to installation personnel concerning all facets of hazardous materials and wastes to include improved methods and procedures. Advises installation personnel using hazardous materials on measures to control or eliminate hazardous environmental conditions.

Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs helps connect veterans and their family members to the benefits and services they earned through their military service. 

Our Central Office is located in Olympia and includes a Veterans Service Center as well as administrative support for all agency programs.

WDVA offers long-term care in our four State Veteran Homes (the Washington Soldiers Home, the Washington Veterans Home, the Spokane Veterans Home, and the Walla Walla Veterans Home) for honorably discharged veterans, spouses of residents, widows of eligible veterans, and Gold Star Parents.

The Veterans Services and Counseling and Wellness Divisions provide claims assistance as well as counseling services for veterans and their family members.  And our State Veterans Cemetery honors veterans in their final resting place.

As our DEI Innovations Fiscal intern in the Workforce Strategies section, this position contributes to OFM’s mission by providing enterprise level strategies by demonstrating competence in diversity, inclusion, equity, anti-racist, and the cultural needs of Washington State Business Resource Groups. You will support the BRG Coordinator.

Duty: Responsible for the accurate and timely BRG data entry on fiscal spreadsheets.

Submit invoices to the fiscal department for processing.

  • Review, analyze and process vendor payment claims in accordance with percurrent statutes, regulations, and agreements.
  • Perform analysis to resolve problems related to accounts payable.
  • Review, analyze and verify data from multiple sources and correct discrepancies as necessary.
  • Analyze fiscal data from multiple sources to reconcile all general ledger accounts to ensure accurate balances.
  • Research discrepancies regarding past due accounts and process correcting entries as needed.

Preferred/Desired Education, Experience, and Competencies.

  • Two years of increasing responsibility performing advanced or more complex accounting and/or fiscal analysis.
  • Analytical and reasoning skills: document processes and procedures for consistency and completeness.
